Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
First question should be "are you willing to move to somewhere reasonably close to your workplace"?

If the answer is no, do not sign.

"and Beauchamp was cast as the outsider who had dethroned a club icon."

No, that would be Harry.

Good read, thanks. obviously a very talented winger in some of that footage, i doubt scouts could afford to make the same mistake again these days.

Whilst viewing there was a link to Mill**** away at Peterboro; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Akk3Na2eMb8 ( yes was bored) recently .....songs about Bobby Moore and East London feature, unsurprisingly!

'Disco' Dale Gordon? He fucking destroyed us when he played for Norwich

Easthamico.

There was no transfer window back then

The way they are talking about his fuckwit anyone would think he had been dragged away from some recently discovered lost Amazonian tribe.

He didn't come on, he just warmed up and got loads of grief. We spent much of the game complaining about it costing £8 to get in and calling Ricky Otto "Whoopi".

Didn't he play in a pre season friendly at Southend?

Great assessment from Bonds hope joey appreciated the feedback

From that interview, it's obvious he's a bit of a divvy.

Good article..however, I do wish we would give a tad less fck about the likes of lampard, Ince, joey etc...

Surely the best way to react is not to give a shit about players who leave in bad circumstances. Fck em

Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
That was the second summer running that our main signing ended up being a massive cock up.

Dale Gordon cost £750k from Rangers the previous year and played all of 9 league games and scoring once in his three year stint.

With hindsight Bonds was clearly pretty shit in the transfer market.

"The boy was a total wimp" - I'm likely to believe my hero, Sir William Arthur Bonds, on this one.

Adrian Whitbread barely played for us (the player involved in the part exchange for Beauchamp). He's moved on and had an adventurous managerial career, though.
Puerto Rico Islanders
Antigua Barracuda FC
Bahrain U23
Puerto Rico FC (currently)

Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
IIRC we tried to buy him in the January transfer window but he didn't want to come. I was puzzled at the time why we went back in for him.

I phoned up Peter Storrie about it later and he laid the blame firmly at Bonds door.

Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
You do wonder how much time was spent then and now on assessing the mental side of players .... maturity, character , intelligence.
If you were manager you'd want to interview someone like a job interview almost. Plus talk to people in the game who have dealt with them.

As painful as it is it would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall when he burst into tears and told Harry & Bonzo that he wanted his MUMMY.

Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
I remember the 5-3 game against Oxford, where Beauchamp played and I think scored for Oxford. The actual signing was a fiasco but surely somebody from our side should have done their homework on him and realised he would be a problem.

Nice change to read a piece written by a fan who can actually write.

Beauchamp would have been a great player.

Re: The Joey Beauchamp debacle.
I scouted him at a Charlton v Oxford game at Upton Park.

He had a cracking game, easily the best player on the pitch.
